A Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEM2) Program.
The Metropolitan Saturday Academy is a non-profit 501(c)(3) scientific and educational enrichment
program designed to create an interest in science and technology. The Metropolitan Saturday
Academy started in 1997 to provide comprehensive, creative learning, non-traditional educational
seminars and “hands on” activities by experts in the fields of science, technology, engineering,
mathematics, career development, communications, budget and finance, physical fitness, history,
health and nutrition.  The major goal is to develop a cadre of youth in Science, Technology,
Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEM2) disciplines in the future.

The Metropolitan Saturday Academy is designed to build self-confident, community-oriented
leaders by strengthening student’s educational skills, improving academic achievement, providing a
school-to-career focus, exposure to colleges and universities and enhancing problem-solving,
critical thinking, analytical, communication, presentation, leadership and interpersonal skills.  This
program is supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  The use of a
NASA videotape “NASA Underground Railroad(UGRR):Connections to Freedom and Science” is
used to increase awareness of the history of the UGRR and  the role celestial navigation played in
its success.

Research opportunities are offered for participants to expand their understanding about science
and technology through the application of scientific and mathematical concepts.  The program also
provides an opportunity for participants to utilize their talents and abilities to showcase acquired
scientific and technical knowledge by designing STEM museum exhibitions which are presented and
demonstrated annually at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.  Artistic expression
such as music, poetry, storytelling, dance activities to promote physical fitness and other
nontraditional methods are provided to make this a unique experience.

A major focus of the Metropolitan Saturday Academy is to develop programs for underrepresented
multicultural youth by creating innovative methods of educating to maximize their learning potential.
The program is offered without regard to race, gender, religion, national origin, age, or disability
