Mr. Carter Bowman grew up as a child walking the streets and playing in the nooks and crannies of a
Washington neighborhood referred to as “Black Georgetown” as it was known in its beginnings. Throughout
the years, Mr. Bowman stayed attached to the family church, Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where he
maintained and preserved the rich history of Mt. Zion’s burial ground, an Underground Railroad National
Historic Site, the oldest African burial ground in Washington, DC, which enslaved people used to escape
along the Potomac River. In addition, Mr. Bowman has touched the lives of the youth and his legacy will live
through them and many others.
